On the Easel this week! My first blog

Hi I’m Samuel Raphael, a 20 year old fine artist, and if you’re reading this then you are seeing my first ever blog post. I am a Psychology student at the University of Edinburgh but I also work as an artist on the side. Most of my commissions have been paintings of people’s pets and animals, but my most recent work was with the race horse King of Stars! (I will write about that in next weeks post!)

Going forward I will post on this page once a week sharing what I’ve been working on that week and anything else I find in the art world that might be interesting, including podcasts, articles or anything else inspiring!

I will try to keep it short and sweet whilst giving you as much value as I can through my art.

To kick things off this week I wanted to share a drawing that I started work on a couple of days ago. I used charcoal because I wanted to go as dark as I could in the shadows whilst keeping the bright highlights. I love how a strong contrast looks in a portrait!

I also used powdered charcoal for the first time in the background and some of the mid-tones to create a softer look, so I’m going to be experimenting more with that in the coming days.

Thanks for reading!

Samuel
